Brian Pangburn started skydiving in 1991, a treat for himself for his birthday. Two years later, while waiting for his wife to make an AFF jump at a small Cessna DZ in Maricopa (Estrella), he was approached by three skydivers he had never met and was asked if he could fill in for their 4th who was absent from practice that day. Brian made his first CRW (Canopy Relative Work - which was later renamed Canopy Formation officially) jump and never desired to do freefall again. Brian found his true passion in skydiving. This page was made to document the team members and accomplishments throughout the years.
1996
In 1996 Brian participated in his first nationals competition on team "Desert Diamond". The team had been practicing on their large 200+ square feet Pursuit canopies since team conception but had ordered the new Lightning 143, 160, and 176 size canopies for the team and they arrived 4 days prior to competition. So the team wanted to jump their new canopies for their first national competition in Eloy (Skydive Arizona) and averaged ONE point per round. They had been averaging 2.75 points per round in practice with their Pursuits and learned a valuable lesson about jumping new canopies for a competitrion! Team members of Desert Diamond were:
Brian Pangburn (back in the day... the video was done from the ground using a dedicated camera man for all teams and a high powered telephoto camera lens)
Billy Reagan
Lorne Pool
Chris Knight (Team member Bill Cooper was injured a few weeks prior to competition so we had a substitute for #4)
1997
Nationals was at Perris California. There were a record 12 sequential teams that year and we placed #6. (Top half!) Desert Diamond team members were:
Brian Pangburn
Billy Reagan
Lorne Pool
Bill Cooper
1998
Nationals was back at Skydive Arizona in Eloy. Our team Desert Diamond had two team members decide to quit CRW. The other Arizona team, Frayed Knot, also had two team members quit so we decided to join forces. Our team member Billy Regan
said he wanted a new team name for the "new" team and came up with "Soul Purpose". Soul Purpose practiced hard that year and was able to produce their first trip to the medal podium. Team members of Soul Purpose were:Brian Pangburn
Billy Regan
Kevin Vetter
Joe Lambright

U.S. National record - 56 canopies
After the national competition (the following day) drop zone owner Roger Nelson said to all the CRW dogs "If you can all go up and build a 25-way diamond in one attempt I will give you a free jump". So we did.
That was my first formation larger than an 8-way and introduced me to the world of big-way CRW. Two months later in Lake Wales I found myself setting a new U.S. record of 56 canopies linked together. (It was in fact a "world record" but we did not
invite any FAI sanctioned judges to ratify the record so the U.S. record ended up being larger than the world record which stood at 53 at the time.
2003
Nationals @ Lake Wales Florida. World Meet @ Gap France. In 2003 I started to do 8-way Speed with FSC-8 sponsored by the Florida Skydiving center and went to my first ever world competition.
